Acoustic and electric guitars usually have 6 strings.
These strings are generally tuned to a standardised set of notes. This is called 'standard tuning'. You can tune the guitar however you want and some guitarists build their whole sound around alternate tunings, but for now let's focus on standard tuning, in which the majority of guitar music is written and played!
The first step in being able to figure out a way around the guitar is to be able to identify each string and the note it is tuned to. It's easier than it sounds - don't worry!
Eddie (FATTEST STRING)
Ate
Dynamite
Good
Bye
Eddie (THINNEST STRING)
So to summarise, the string/note names - from fattest to thinnest strings - are:
E A D G B E
Memorise these and you're on your way to learning the guitar!
