THE EVIL POWER CHORD SHAPE!!!

To make a power chord we need to play at least 2 notes

e---
B---
G---
D---
A--7 <-RING
E--5 <-INDEX

The more commonly used voicing of a power chord uses 3 strings

 G

e---
B---
G---
D--7 <-PINKY
A--7 <-RING
E--5 <-INDEX

C

Your thumb should sit against the back of the neck, positioned somewhere between your middle and ring finger.

It won't feel comfortable at first - you'll probably have to apply a lot of pressure to get the notes to ring clearly, but it shouldn't hurt either. If it is hurting immediately stop playing and wait until the next lesson to raise the issue - it's not worth risking long term damage from bad playing technique

The key here is to practise getting in and out of the shape really slowly until your hand gets used to being in such a strange position. Aim to hear each note in the chord ringing out clearly

Good luck, and Godspeed
